The Local Area

Villa Mimosa is fortunate to be located at the very heart of the Algarve. Only a few minutes drive by car will take you up into the dramatic Monchique mountains to the north or to the rolling expanse of sandy beaches and coastal towns to the south.

The village of Alcalar has two excellent restaurants and a local cafe/bar which sells delicious daily bread - all of which are easily reached on foot from the villa. The nearest town of Alvor is a busy bustling traditional fishing town with an abundance of restaurants and bars and shops along its narrow streets. The nearby beach at Alvor is one of the best on the Algarve and one of the most photographed with its towering sandstone arches jutting out into the ocean and the miles of golden sand and rolling waves. The beaches around this area are kept very clean and child friendly.

Other nearby areas of interest include the coastal towns of Portimao, Lagos and Carvoeiro, and the pretty mountain town of Silves. With excellent access to the motorway, most areas of the Algarve can be easily reached within an hour whilst the Portuguese capital of Lisbon is only two hours away and makes for an excellent day out. For children the Zoomarine water park and conservation centre, the Aqualand water park and the Lagos Zoo are great fun.

Probably the largest portion of tourism on the Algarve comes from the high and growing number of golf courses across the area, and none is more famous than the PGA Penina Golf Course which is less than five minutes away by car from Villa Mimosa. Other courses such as Palmares, Morgado and Boa Vista are also easily within reach.

Right on the doorstep, the surrounding region of Mexilhoeira Grande and up into Serra de Monchique (the dense wooded mountain range separating the Algarve from Alentejo) provide some of the most unspoilt scenery on the Algarve. Even the journey from the main roads down to the villa provides some truly beautiful scenery with vineyards (adegas) and orange groves all around.

On route to Monchique is the spa of Caldas de Monchique, where the Romans built baths using the natural spring waters which are still in use today and are believed to have great benefit in treating serious illnesses. There is a truly unique and mystical character to Caldas de Monchique, it is definately worth a visit.
